Close up of moss and other small vegetation on an old brick wall in Delfshaven, Rotterdam, with boats, quay and houses out of focus in the background

Urban Nature in Delfshaven

When thinking of urban nature, most people envision trees, gardens and parks. But also on a smaller scale beautiful landscapes and ecosystems can be discovered. This picture was made in a downtown Rotterdam neighbourhood called Delfshaven, at the roadside terrace of city brewery De Pelgrim. Inspired by a delicious glass of their Dubbellam beer.

Evening has fallen over Rotterdam; still from a time lapse movie with a dark blue sky over the Old West and Erasmus Medical Centre

Rapid Nightfall – a Time-Lapse of Rotterdam

I am a big fan of time-lapse movies, with those rapidly moving people, cars, clouds and stars in breathtaking landscapes. You don’t need very specialized equipment to make them. After some study in the manual of my Nikon D5100 I discovered the shooting interval option that allows you to define exactly how many frames you want with any given interval. A tripod is of course essential, and a reasonably presentable view is also useful. And then you have to wait for the right weather for a nice evening twilight, just about halfway between a bright sky and a thick cloud… Read More

De witte bloesem van sierkersen in de lente op de Van Oldenbarneveltplaats in Rotterdam

Flowering Cherries in Rotterdam

Trees in the city, I love ‘m. But I’d love a little variation as well. In Rotterdam there are so many plane trees that even I, traditionally a big plane tree fan, get a little bored. But fortunately sometimes a different species is chosen, and how beautiful that can be seen at Van Oldenbarneveltplaats. Since a few days the flowering cherries there are in bloom. The experts are not yet sure whether they’re Prunus Avium or Prunus Serrulata. One week each year It is a pity that the stunning beauty lasts only a week, but hey, that’s nature. And that… Read More

Artist impression of proposed pergola on the Lloydpier in Rotterdam

Pergola on the Pier

Garden on the Pier is an initiative like there are quite a few these days: a group of residents that turn a vacant piece of land into a temporary park for the neighbourhood. The Pier at stake here is the Lloyd Pier in Rotterdam which, as a consequence of the economic crisis, won’t be redeveloped as rapidly as originally envisioned. A part of the Pier can be used as a garden for several years. This is what the site currently looks like: Rose garden One of the plans is the construction of a pergola against which roses can grow. Piet… Read More

Exhibition of images of Dudok's Bijenkorf department store at the Nivon cafe in Rotterdam

Exhibition in/about Rotterdam

Yesterday my exhibition in the cafe in the Nivon building in Rotterdam started. The theme of the exhibition is the architecture and history of Rotterdam; on display are the three images of the old Bijenkorf bij architect Dudok, the panorama of Schouwburgplein and a series of digital paintings showing various locations in the city. The works are exhibited at the Nivon untill the end of april. UPDATE: More exhibitions with my work: at the Oranjebrug gallery in Schiedam and at the RIVM in Bilthoven.

Fragment van een verschilderde foto gemaakt op de veertiende verdieping van de Rotterdam met de Rijnhaven, Katendrecht, Wilhelminapier, Nieuwe Maas and Scheepvaartkwartier

View of Rotterdam, from De Rotterdam

A few weeks ago I was visiting friends who are living in De Rotterdam. In the late nineties, employed at OMA, I’ve been working on the design of that building. Now, fifteen years later, it’s finally finished and it draws the attention of the world. Manual focus The view was, even on the fourteenth floor, not even halfway to the top, allready pretty overwhelming. Of course I had brought my camera. I had just forgotten that my lens was still on manual focus. And then of course I should do some manual focussing. As a result the panoramic image I… Read More

Aert van Nesstraat in Rotterdam with trees, new pavement and new street furniture

Greening Aert van Nes

Aert van Nesstraat is a rather stony street in the center of Rotterdam. There are some interesting buildings: the pre-war Atlanta hotel and some monuments from the post-war reconstruction era like the Lijnbaan and the Bank Mees and Hope. And okay, a few architectural blunders from the seventies: the parking garage of the Bijenkorf and the so-called Rotterdam Building. But what’s especially remarkable is the total absence of green. Admittedly, the western part of the road runs along one of the Lijnbaan courts. But in the section between Lijnbaan and Coolsingel there is not a tree, not a bush, not… Read More

How the Oasis of the Seas, largest cruiseship in the world, would look if placed upright as a tower on the Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam

Landmark: the Oasis of the Seas as a Skyscraper

The Oasis of the Seas, ex aequo with its two siblings Harmony and Allure of the Seas, has been the largest cruise ship in the world for years. The boat has a length of no less than 360 meters; that is so long that you cannot have two of them moored at the cruise terminal on Wilhelmina Pier. There are no less than sixteen decks, so you could speak of a floating apartment building. Or perhaps a floating city, because in the center of the ship there are even a square and a park. High-rise In 2014, the gigantic vessel… Read More
